Bio

Teaching is not my first profession. I’m a career-changer. My original career was as a production/operations manager in the graphic communications field in Corporate America. I ran advertising companies and departments creating things like ads, catalogs, packaging… and other print materials like that.

Schooling: I really like school and being a student, myself. I’ve attended a bunch of schools. My high school was an art school – the High School of Art & Design in NYC. After I graduated, I went to a community college (NYC College of Technology). When I graduated there I went to work in the ad industry. But I realized the importance of a 4-year degree, so after several years of working, I returned to school – I went evenings & weekends to Adelphi U. It took me 5 years, but it was worth it. (I don’t suggest you go that route, though. Do it the easy way – finish college after HS.) Then, I went to grad school at NYU for a little while before deciding to go into teaching. I went to Wilson College in PA for a little while to earn my PA teaching certificate, but when I applied and was accepted to Teach for America, my new career accelerated. I moved down south, got teacher training at Delta State U. through TFA and immediately began teaching mathematics classes. I recently completed an online graduate course in mathematics education at UTA. So, it just goes to show you how much I know – when I was a younger, I thought my schooling was going to end when I graduated community college.

Personal: I was born and raised in Queens, NY. I have three children -- two sons and a daughter. I like comic books, reading, skiing, dogs, and of course… math!

Geometry: Course Description

Geometry Grades 9-12

1 Credit – Elective Prerequisite – Algebra 1

Geometry stands for:
geo, which means earth + metria, which means measure. (Greek)

Simply put, geometry is the study of the size, shape and position of 2- dimensional shapes and 3-dimensional figures. However, geometry is used daily by almost everyone. In geometry, one explores spatial sense and geometric reasoning. Geometry is found everywhere: in art, architecture, engineering, robotics, land surveys, astronomy, sculptures, space, nature, sports, machines, cars and much more.

When taking geometry, spatial reasoning and problem solving skills will be developed. Geometry is linked to many other topics in math, specifically measurement and is used daily by architects, engineers, architects, physicists and land surveyors just to name a few.
